We have more control of our lives than we realize – so much so that we can consciously choose happiness. Entrepreneur discusses five ways to do just that.
- Watch the way you think
Our thoughts breed our feelings, which breed our habits. If we allow ourselves to get stuck in a negative thought cycle, we probably won’t feel very good about our life or ourselves. Often, changing this is as simple as shifting our focus. For instance, instead of thinking about what is stressing you out, try to remind yourself what is good in your life.

Change your thoughts, change your life.
- Create a gratitude journal
Write down the things in your life that you are grateful for. This will remind you of the good and help you maintain perspective.
Aim to write down five things every day.
- Perform random acts of kindness
Do good in the world. These acts can be simple, such as holding the door or paying for the person behind you to get coffee, but they can make a huge difference in your demeanor and happiness level. Bringing someone else happiness will bring you happiness.
- Work out
Exercise is as important for your mental health as it is for your physical health. It helps you feel better about the way you look, improves sleep, and increases dopamine levels in your brain. All of these effects contribute positively to your life in terms of your happiness, self-esteem, and stress levels.
Aim to exercise at a moderate level three days a week. A quick 30-minute walk will make a huge difference.
Volunteering helps you focus on other people instead of yourself. Doing this is win-win, because it allows you to provide help to other people who are in need, and it helps you focus on something other than your worries. Research shows that volunteerism is a mood lifter and depression reducer. You don’t have to make a huge commitment, but a little bit of volunteerism goes a long way.
