Our diet affects our mental and physical health, as well as our overall mood and happiness, Care2.com reports.
Below are eight ways to improve your mood through your diet.
- Don’t skip meals
Eating keeps our blood sugar levels up, which is an important mood stablizer. Skipping meals causes blood sugar levels to dip, which in turn increases irritability and fatigue. It’s recommended to eat three meals and two snacks every day.
- Include protein in each meal
Protein also helps keep your blood sugar level – and thus your mood – stable. Incorporating blood sugar in your diet also helps you feel fuller longer.
- Eat more high fiber vegetables
Another blood sugar and mood stabilizer! Include more high fiber vegetables – such as broccoli, kale, and celery – into your diet.
- Eat more high fiver fruits, as well
High fiber fruits like apples and pears boost your energy levels and provide necessary vitamins and minerals.
- Add more fatty acids into your diet
Fatty acids help the brain function as it should. Lack of fatty acids in your diet can result in increased feelings of depression and hostility, and decreased memory capabilities. Sources of fatty acids include salmon, flaxseed, nuts, and olive oil.
- Drink more water
Water is pivotal to overall health and ensuring smooth bodily functioning. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day to decrease headaches, mood swings, concentration issues, and tiredness.
- Reduce caffeine intake
Many of us rely on caffeine to keep our energy up throughout the day, but the withdrawal effects may not be worth it in the long-run. Once the caffeine wears off, people begin to feel more impatient and irritable. Cut down your intake to help yourself maintain your energy levels on your own and decrease your mood swings.
- Cut down on sugar
Sugar – both natural and synthetic – causes serious fluctuations in blood sugar levels and moods. On a more serious level, it increases the risk of developing diabetes. Instead of sugar, try honey, maple syrup, and stevia.
In addition to these diet tips, be sure to exercise and sleep well to maintain and improved and stable mood.
