The holidays are a time of love and togetherness, but can also bring stress from the traveling, shopping, spending, and entertaining, Huffington Post Canada reports.
Below are seven ways to help relieve your stress during the holiday season.
- Go Outside
It’s usually cold and dark this time of year, which makes us less likely to spend time outside and exercise. Most holiday parties and gatherings occur inside, so make an extra effort to spend time in the outdoors. The fresh air and sunshine will help you clear your mind and increase your endorphins.
- Plan Ahead
Organization always helps keep stress levels down. When there is so much to juggle during this time, it is easy to become disorganized and overwhelmed. Be sure to include some activities just for yourself when you plan your holiday season – get a massage, go to an exercise class, or take some time to meditate.
- Boost Your Immune System
Holidays normally involve parties, late nights, and drinking, which can lead to lack of sleep, colds, and the flu. Be sure to eat well (not just the sugary desserts!) and take supplements that boost your immune system. Drink green tea and take some vitamins.
- Be Honest
Be realistic about what you can and cannot do. You are only one person who can only do so much. Prioritize what has to get done, what can happen later, and what you can take off your list.
- Tune In
Music lifts your spirits and has calming effects, such as lowering heart rate. Listen to some holiday music to unwind and feel more festive.
Step away from the electronics. Too much connectivity can stress us out, so take a break from your various communication methods.
- Give Back
The holidays are a time of giving. Performing an act of kindness, giving to charity, volunteering, etc. are all activities that uplift us.
